Mortuary Air testing results

An OH&S item of interest for the health and well being of all mortuary staff:

Keeping you informed about your health is very important to us at GMS Innovation. As such we would like to share with you the results of recent mortuary air testing results involving the use of Genelyn products

As well as Australia, Genelyn products are now widely used in European countries, the UK and France.

If you are using Genelyn, the outcome of this testing will reaffirm your confidence that you have made the right choice. If you are not using Genelyn, these results should assist you if you are considering changing chemicals or looking for a safer option.

You may or may not be aware that the International Exposure Limit set for formaldehyde in the Health and Safety Executive Guidance Note EH40/2005: Workplace Exposure Limits for Formaldehyde in Air is currently set at two (2) parts per million (PPM). -2.0PPM

The testing was carried out using a UMEX 100 formaldehyde dosimeter diffusive sampler, solvent desorption and high liquid chromatography badge attached to the lapels of the embalmers within 6” (15cm) of their breathing zone. The diffusers were impregnated with 2, 4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH). The badges were returned to the laboratory and analysed by use of desorption techniques and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and UV detection equipment.

Conclusion: the test data is quite lengthy noting the details of the cases embalmed, length of time exposed and quantities used etc however the results for your interest are as follows:

During the exercise there was no evidence that either the Long Term Exposure Limit (LTEL) or Short Term Exposure Limit (STEL) for formaldehyde, as set for by EH40/2005: Workplace Exposure Limits were exceeded.

The resulting readings were only 0.12 PPM on one embalmer and 0.08 PPM on another embalmer which falls well below the limit of 2.0PPM
